I am redoing my bathroom – i have an idea in my head what i want it to look like – but have never actually done it before. I want my bath sunk into a big block with tiles around it. I have seen pictures – and i think cement would be the best way to do it – can i please have some advice?

Answer:

Paul – cement sounds very permanent! It may be a good solid way of building you bath sides, but what happens when you need to replace the bath? Or get access under the bath for a leaking or blocked up pipe? Most bath surrounds are made with wood – and tiled. This is easier to remove and change. There are lots of guides online and your best idea would be to search Google for “DIY Drop-in tub” or a “DIY walk-in bath” Hope this helps.

We have a new shower curtain, and it is driving me crazy! It keeps floating away from the side of the bath and sticking to you in the shower. Also, it is only a few weeks old and i can already see it’s getting mouldy. What can I do?

Answer:

Paul – i will answer this in two parts:

1. The reason the shower curtain is moving towards you in the shower is the heat from the shower trapped in the shower space is making the cooler air in the rest of the bathroom pull in. The ways to stop this are… Leave a small gap to let the air circulate. Weigh down the shower curtain with some big shampoo bottles or bath products. Buy a heavier shower curtain.

2. The mould on your shower curtain is just a fact of life I’m afraid. It happens to the best of them. You can make sure your bathroom is well ventilated and that the steam does not stay too long after your shower. This will prevent the mould. Make sure when you purchase a shower curtain it says mould resistant. And try to keep the curtain dry. It will not stop mould completely – but all the tips will help.
